Movie Conventions Research: Five Nights At Freddy's

Image
What elements (Conventions) of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?  This film has two big plot twists that heavily affect the plot, which is an element of thriller movies. Crime is also present, such as break-ins. This is another convention of a thriller film. Suspense and tension, and a convention known as a "MacGuffin" are also present. MacGuffins are described at the objective of the antagonist, what they desire to accomplish. It can be an object or a goal. Suspense was present as there were many scenes in which the viewer can anticipate something bad to happen.  What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that you like?  The plot twists and all of the suspense were appealing to me. It truly did contribute to making this movie thrilling, as it does fit the thriller genre (and horror), after all. The plot twists were very entertaining to me personally. The suspense I found exciting, and made me feel almost stressed, but

What elements (Conventions) of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?                     Huge amount of action, suspense, drama, and scenes with low-key lighting.                     What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that you like?                     I love action and drama, so I would say that those elements appealed to me. As silly as it sounds, elements that include action-packed scenes and drama, whether it be with an antagonist or other character, help to build up suspense, a convention absolutely necessary for this genre.  What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?                    N/A, all conventions that I noticed in this film were enjoyable and appealing to me.

What elements (Conventions) of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?                This movie has a common element of thriller films, which is dark yet simple lighting. Suspense is also created through scenes such as where explosions occur with the audience being aware it will happen. There is also lots of drama, which is often included in thrillers. The drama causes tension and high stakes, and may also have lots of action, which this film does have.  What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that you like?                I feel that the suspense is very necessary to the genre and plot, and it adds to the viewing experience. I also appreciate the drama to add on to feelings of tension/suspense  What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?               Personally, I didn't find anything about the genre of the movie that did not appeal to me.

Genre Decision

Image
After researching 3 genres, I've made my decision. The genre I choose is thriller, and I have several reasons for this. Thriller films are huge fans of plot twists. In my movie intro, I would like to make use of a plot twist. That is mainly how I came to my conclusion, and I also want to attempt to replicate the lighting techniques used in thrillers. I also personally find the thriller genre most interesting out of the ones I looked at, which contributed to my decision.

Genre Research- Dark comedy

Image
Dark comedies are films that make light of serious topics, or ones that are considered taboo. An example of these topics would be death and anything crime related. Other names for dark comedies are black comedies, morbid humor, and dark humor. I can't find anything on camera angles for dark comedies, however I will note some things. A lot of the filtering in dark comedies is warm and grainy. This is noticeable especially in movies like Heathers and American Psycho. However, in American Psycho, in some situations, like for example when Patrick Bateman calls his lawyer, the lighting is very dark and dim. The use of this dark lighting would be to help show the seriousness of the situation. However, humor will most definitely be applied. It is a dark comedy, after all. I've also noticed that there are high and low angles prevalent in both films. This attribute can most likely be applied to any film of the same genre, and across genres. In American Psycho, when Patrick takes down P

Crime genre films are usually adaptations of crime literature pieces. They may overlap with elements of other sub-genres, such as drama, or noir. They may also be gangster films, often having to deal with mafias or crime families. Other sub-genres that may be included are also mystery and suspense. Important camera angles in crime films are high and low angles. Since this films are usually centered around powerful figures, these angles are used to establish the dominant character. They are also used to establish the opposite, weaker character. Because of the focus on power and intimidation, these angles are useful as they help to convey these factors. Close-ups and extreme close-ups are also used in crime genre films. They show facial expressions, and reveal key details in the scene. These details are usually realizations the character is having, or their thought process. Sometimes these shots are used to invoke tension in the scene and viewers. This can especially be the case if the

Genre Research Blog- Thriller

Image
Thriller genre films usually tend to overlap several elements from other genres. These elements can come from crime, horror, and detective fiction genres. Thriller films have certain camera angles. For example, high angled/birds eye view, which may be used to give the effect that whoever is being looked down on is vulnerable, and unable to fight back whatever the problem may be. Close up shots may be used to show character reactions, often shock, anger, or sorrow. Tracking or panning shots typically are used to give the impression that the subject is being followed or watched. It may help to build tension or suspense, and gives the audience a little more context of the surroundings and as to what exactly is happening. Tilted angles add drama, and some kind of tension to a scene. The awkwardness of the position of the camera creates an unnerving feel, as it could be the POV of something unknown or dangerous. Low angle shots are extremely common, and are used to convey the message that t

My Pitch

Image
Pitch A: Two friends gather for Christmas, but behind the scenes, someone is planning something sinister. Pitch B: A teen is left home alone, but someone is actually with them 24/7.  Discuss Pitch A: This pitch may be somewhat easy to do, since I am going to be meeting with my best friends at their house, and the setting will be appropriate because it'll be nicely decorated.  Discuss Pitch B: This pitch also is quite easy, as no specific conditions are required for a house setting. This pitch can also be up for interpretation or tweaking, and the storyline could be changed to being stalked in a public place rather than inside a house.  Final Decision: I've decided to go with Pitch B, because I feel that it is much more open for creative interpretation, and can be changed to a similar topic if needed.  Pitch B: A teen is left home alone, but someone is actually with them 24/7.

Movie Group Blog

So, I have to talk about who I'm working with for this project. I've once again run into this same problem: I have nobody to work with. This is either because I have no friends in this class period, or because all of the friends I have in other periods have groups that are already full, resulting in me getting excluded. It's so frustrating, if I'm being honest. At least I know I could do this project by myself, and work with people outside of school to use as actors. I need to start coming up with ideas for my script, and for my pitch blog. I don't even know what I'm going to make my movie intro about. No clue, sadly. At least this project isn't due until March, so I have plenty of time to figure it out. I also might be meeting with my elementary friends on the 16th, which is next weekend I believe. Hopefully by then I'll have an idea, and I can tell ask them for their help. Maybe I'll do a Christmas movie, I really don't know. We could go to a r

Movie Intro Blog

Hi, so it looks like I'm doing this again after a bit of time. As you may already know, my name is Val, and I'm a student at Fort Lauderdale High School. My class has been assigned our final task, which is to make a movie intro. It looks like I need to do 10 production blogs, and it seems like a lot. Personally, I think it won't be that hard or anything. Anyway, the whole point of this blog is to introduce myself again. I'd like to talk about classes I like and dislike. I absolutely despite Algebra 2 and and Personal Finance. Algebra really sucks because I can't understand the material no matter how hard I try, even if I study. The teacher's teaching style does not register in my mind, and on top of that, the class is just extremely boring. I dislike Personal Finance probably only because my teacher's voice annoys me, and my classmates are extremely weird. I also have it for 4th period, and I have to walk to the third floor of building 17. The work is annoyi
