Genre Decision

Image
Me and my partner decided on drama for now. It’s not a permanent decision especially since we didn’t have enough in class time to discuss anything. So for now, we’re just going with drama for our genre decision. We’re for sure changing it later on but I don’t know what our final decision will actually be. Drama was chosen as a temporary choice because it’s one of the most popular genres and pretty easy to make a film out of.

Our Pitch

Image
Pitch 1: Long lost twins find each other after being switched up at birth Pitch 2: Millionaire leaves his wife for someone else under the assumption that she's poor, but she turns out to be the richest person in the world I probably wouldn't be interested in doing the first plot. This is because it's super basic, just very cliche. To be honest, me and my partner haven't had the chance to discuss anything. We just agreed to come up with random plots then mutually agree on one. But the first plot I definitely wouldn't pick, only because of how unoriginal it is. Pitch 2 is more interesting to me personally, so I would most likely pick this one. These kinds of dramas are also common, but they're just way more entertaining. It's also really enjoyable, and with the right technique, you can make it more unique than other dramas. The inspiration for me choosing this pitch came from those webtoons and the short story video apps. I actually like this one a lot more, ...

Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in your genre     -Color palette, this one has cooler tones     -Dark lighting      -Realistic settings c. Common Editing in your genre     -There are a lot of zoom ins and zoom outs     -Eye level     -Tracking shot  d. Example films of your genre e. What elements of the genre that you like?     -What I like about this drama is that it has a really realistic plot, and a rising point of tension in the story. This drama seems inspired from real life situations, but  dramatized  f. What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?     -Again, how long these films seem to feel. Despite the less than 10 minute duration, it felt like a waiting game of seeing what would happen  next. There's nothing wrong with a bit of suspense, but too much ...

Short film research: A Reasonable Request

 a. Common Sound in your genre     -this film shares a lot of similarities with the others, especially with sound. It all comes from within the world of the film and from dialogue as well  b. Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in your genre     -eye level angles     -warm colors from the lighting  c. Common Editing in your genre     -this film is just like Lifeline, with not much editing other than lighting probably d. Example films of your genre     -Titanic     -Parasite     -The Florida Project e. What elements of the genre that you like?     -With this film, I thought the sudden drop of humor was funny. A drama with a bit of comedy is always great in my opinion. f. What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?     -Dramas can feel like they take a while to end, which can bore the viewer. This short film definitely felt longer than 8 minutes

a. Common Sound in your genre     -a lot of natural (or diegetic) sounds that come from the environment/setting of the film b. Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in your genre     -costumes aren't exactly costumes, but regular outfits. They are coordinated to look nice for the set     -a lot of eye level shots c. Common Editing in your genre     -this film has minimal editing, only subtitles and a possible filter. I noticed there are no  jump cuts of any kind here, it feels very natural  d. Example films of your genre     -Hachi: A Dog's Tale     -Oppenheimer     -Joker e. What elements of the genre that you like?     -In this drama film I really liked the sudden suspenseful moment where one character bangs on a table and yells. Short film research: The Boy Who Cheated Death

Image
  a. Common Sound in your genre     -moments with eerie music     -a lot of diegetic sound     -sometimes no dialogue b. Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in your genre     -use of camera angles to show emotion     -sound, music and dialogue     -lighting and setting c. Common Editing in your genre     -from what I noticed, the editing in a lot of these dramas are somewhat minimal. This could be to preserve the raw emotion that is already conveyed by the acting itself d. Example films of your genre     -I Saw the TV Glow     -The Godfather     -The Boy in Striped Pajamas e. What elements of the genre that you like?     -I really like how dramas tend to have a rising point where things get tense     -Subtle elements of suspense f. What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?     -too much quietness or too much chaos

Research: How to make a short film

Image
What is your takeaway from the video? What good information did you gather while watching it? How do you envision this helping you through your short film process? -My key takeaway from the video is that casting matters way more than people think it does. A film doesn't need to have much of a story to it as long as the cast knows what's happening. A well chosen soundtrack and good sound in general can help make or break a film. Never EVER cut corners if you want to make something of genuinely good quality. This helped me through my short film process by teaching me that a lot of effort goes into short films, even if they are only 5 minutes or 25 minutes. Planning is key, and always put thought and effort into planning, as this determines how well your film does and the quality of the final product.
