Short film research: We Used To Own Houses

  a. Common Sound in your genre     -Dialogue     -Noises from environment (background noise) b. Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in your genre     -Color palette, this one has cooler tones     -Dark lighting      -Realistic settings c. Common Editing in your genre     -There are a lot of zoom ins and zoom outs     -Eye level     -Tracking shot  d. Example films of your genre e. What elements of the genre that you like?     -What I like about this drama is that it has a really realistic plot, and a rising point of tension in the story. This drama seems inspired from real life situations, but  dramatized  f. What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?     -Again, how long these films seem to feel. Despite the less than 10 minute duration, it felt like a waiting game of seeing what would happen  next. There's nothing wrong with a bit of suspense, but too much ...

Short film research: A Reasonable Request

Image
 a. Common Sound in your genre     -this film shares a lot of similarities with the others, especially with sound. It all comes from within the world of the film and from dialogue as well  b. Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in your genre     -eye level angles     -warm colors from the lighting  c. Common Editing in your genre     -this film is just like Lifeline, with not much editing other than lighting probably d. Example films of your genre     -Titanic     -Parasite     -The Florida Project e. What elements of the genre that you like?     -With this film, I thought the sudden drop of humor was funny. A drama with a bit of comedy is always great in my opinion. f. What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?     -Dramas can feel like they take a while to end, which can bore the viewer. This short film definitely felt longer than 8 minutes

Short film research: Lifeline

a. Common Sound in your genre     -a lot of natural (or diegetic) sounds that come from the environment/setting of the film b. Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in your genre     -costumes aren't exactly costumes, but regular outfits. They are coordinated to look nice for the set     -a lot of eye level shots c. Common Editing in your genre     -this film has minimal editing, only subtitles and a possible filter. I noticed there are no  jump cuts of any kind here, it feels very natural  d. Example films of your genre     -Hachi: A Dog's Tale     -Oppenheimer     -Joker e. What elements of the genre that you like?     -In this drama film I really liked the sudden suspenseful moment where one character bangs on a table and yells. I also liked how natural the dialogue felt.  f. What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?     -What didn't appeal to me was how there was a lot of silence i...

Short film research: The Boy Who Cheated Death

Image
  a. Common Sound in your genre     -moments with eerie music     -a lot of diegetic sound     -sometimes no dialogue b. Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in your genre     -use of camera angles to show emotion     -sound, music and dialogue     -lighting and setting c. Common Editing in your genre     -from what I noticed, the editing in a lot of these dramas are somewhat minimal. This could be to preserve the raw emotion that is already conveyed by the acting itself d. Example films of your genre     -I Saw the TV Glow     -The Godfather     -The Boy in Striped Pajamas e. What elements of the genre that you like?     -I really like how dramas tend to have a rising point where things get tense     -Subtle elements of suspense f. What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?     -too much quietness or too much chaos

Research: How to make a short film

Image
What is your takeaway from the video? What good information did you gather while watching it? How do you envision this helping you through your short film process? -My key takeaway from the video is that casting matters way more than people think it does. A film doesn't need to have much of a story to it as long as the cast knows what's happening. A well chosen soundtrack and good sound in general can help make or break a film. Never EVER cut corners if you want to make something of genuinely good quality. This helped me through my short film process by teaching me that a lot of effort goes into short films, even if they are only 5 minutes or 25 minutes. Planning is key, and always put thought and effort into planning, as this determines how well your film does and the quality of the final product.

Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

Image
Part 1 The video shows how to tell a story visually, stressing the importance of things like composition, lighting, and camera movement, basically CAMS and/or CLAMPS elements. A big takeaway is how these visual choices can show emotions or tell us about characters, without needing too many words. It also shows how things like framing and color can really shape the mood of a scene. For my short film, this helped me see how important visuals are in telling a story. I want to pay more attention to how each shot can convey feeling or meaning, so the audience gets the message even without the need for dialogue, proving that it's a good plot.  Part 2 The article is a detailed comparison of 12 Monkeys and La Jetee, showing how 12 Monkeys adapts and expands upon the La Jetee short film. The takeaways are the use of time travel as a narrative device, the emphasis on memory and perception, and the shared themes of dystopia and existential struggle. The article mentions how 12 Monkeys b...

Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie

Image
Short Film -Impressions: upon watching this movie I immediately noticed the quality of the video, appropriate for the technology in the early 2000's. I found the plot to be a little confusing due to a lack of dialogue, but I was able to deduce that the little dolls were being persecuted or hunted down by a creature. In terms of conventions, the setting takes place in a post apocalyptic world, with fantasy and sci-fi elements. Character development is shown through the ragdolls' unique personalities, represented by the numbers on their backs. Shane Acker's directorial style uses minimal dialogue to let the visuals do the talking and to show emotion to the audience. He also uses the eerie setting to convey a message.  Full length movie  -The full feature film of 9 is an expansion of the original short from 2005, introducing new elements while maintaining the core themes and plot of the short film. The conventions are relatively the same, but with more advanced technology a...

Group Blog

Hi, so far I have one person who I will be working with on the final task. I'm going to work with my friend Gabe F from our 8th period Media class. We're currently thinking of other people we can add to our team, but because our teachers are bullying us (jk), we are forced to turn these blogs in the day we got them assigned. Right now it's just us, but we'll most likely add other people. Whoever doesn't join is mean and evil and will get a -E on the AICE Media exam (also jk). I decided to work with Gabe because although he's a very silly and goofy person, he is actually very smart. He's extremely smart when he locks in and has to do work, and I know he will bring good ideas to the table. I'm pretty confident that the both of us can come up with something great. If we get more people to join our group, it'll definitely be even better. I have a camera, so I can use that to film, unless someone else has a better camera. But I wanna get those puffy thin...

Intro Blog

Hi again, it's been nearly a year since I've written on this blog. Well, already a year since I first started writing on it. You probably already know my name, but let's start over. I'm Vale, some of my friends call me Val, but I prefer Vale (shoutout to the 4 people who do call me that). I'm now in 11th grade and I'll turn 17 in May, which is 5 months from now. I really can't wait to turn 17, and then 18 so I can have more freedom with my life!! This year, instead of being in AS level Media Studies, I've advanced to A level. There's not much about me that's changed since last year, and when I'm supposed to remember who I am on the spot I kinda forget what I like. I still like the same music and stuff, and games probably. I don't really have time to play games now because of how busy junior year is. Maybe this is just a taste of what adult life will be like sadly. Whenever I do have the time, I'll play Roblox. I really like that game...
